TRY THIS FOR YOURSELF!

THE MOTOR THEORY OF LANGUAGE ORIGIN AND FUNCTION

To observe the relation between the sound of the vowel A and a position or movement of the right arm.

1. Empty your mind - not concentrate but try to have your mind as CLEAR as possible from thoughts and distractions

2. Let your arm hang loosely at your side - completely relaxed.

3. Without opening your mouth or moving your lips or tongue, think of the sound associated with A [as in HAT ]

4. In silence think A a a a ...........

5. Keep the speech sound in your mind as you turn your attention to your arm,
particularly the arm on either side of the elbow (not so much the lower arm near the wrist).

6. If something touches your arm you are immediately aware of your arm; if you move your arm about you are aware of your arm.

7. So - either touch the arm with your left hand or move the arm slightly so that you are aware of the arm.

8. Now there's the arm. The arm is now part of your awareness.

9. Now bring together the sound of A and the awareness of the arm.

Amalgamate these two items of awareness.

Mentally transfer the sound in your mind of the letter A to the awareness of your arm.

10. Observe any movement or position of the arm.

11. If any movement or change of position of the arm occurs, describe in words the movement or change.

If there is no positive result for A, repeat the experiment with the sound O [as in HOT].

If there is a positive result [omit]
