On holiday in Nice in 1970 I bought a copy of Paul Valéry’s L’idée fixe.
The book has many marginal comments with more extended comment
on the end pages. After I had written this, I went by train
from Nice to Digne. In the cathedral there I lit a candle and prayed.
The thought came to me "D’où viennent ces mots?" From this came
my conviction that words are not arbitrary, as I had wrongly thought
